AWWW YEAH NINE

Poor, underappreciated Nine. I must say, the amount of disdain for Nine that I find on Tumblr legitimately baffles me. I have never seen it elsewhere — he’s usually kind of neglected and forgotten, but when brought up people tend to respond positively. But on Tumblr it seems like a lot of people either never watched him or watched and hated him. IDGI. WHAT IS THERE TO HATE? His excellent acting? His flawless character development over the span of thirteen episodes?

I don’t talk about Nine very often, but I love Nine. I think he was incredibly well-written, well-developed and well-acted. People who love him usually mention that it’s a shame Eccleston only did one season, but tbh I think that one season is so flawless that I’ve never really felt like I needed more from it. In thirteen episodes he goes from the outwardly gruff, alien dude who doesn’t understand why Rose might be upset over her dead boyfriend and doesn’t do “domestic” to someone who can’t bring himself to sacrifice humanity to stop the Daleks and doodles “Mr Rose Tyler” on post-its by the TARDIS console. He tries so hard to put up a harsh front because the Time War happened and it sucked, but it never quite works. I think The Parting of the Ways is still the best finale the show has put out precisely because of the way it puts such a great cap on Nine’s story, and how so many thematic threads come together.

And you know, he’s fun and stuff. People seem to be under the impression that Nine is all srs bsnss all the time, but that’s really not the case. Dude dances to Tainted Love and fanboys Charles Dickens, I mean come on.
