Trigger Warning: Rape Jokes/Rape Culture, Holocaust Jokes

annabelleisapeach:

[cut a few lines to condense post]

The other half are people that I assume are also feminists, calling me all manner of things because I dare to laugh at these lines.  Now people that know me well or have followed my blog for a while will know that I consider myself an active feminist.  But I disagree with the vast majority of feminists on rape culture: I think that as feminists who enshroud the subject of rape with such solemnity and then attack so viciously when someone doesn’t treat it in the same manner, we’re contributing to the power that it holds over us.  I believe that in comedy, nothing can be sacred.  Holocaust jokes make us feel triumphant, take the power away from the men behind all of the torture and slaying and turn them into history’s jackasses; the bastards who thought that they could rule the world with violence and hatred are the butt of the ultimate joke.  I think that as putting rape on such a high pedestal, we mentally attributing more power than is necessary to people who are idiot enough to think that when they want sexual gratification, they should take it by force.  And when a rapist has that much power over us and we found ourselves under the threat of rape (as 1 in 6 American women have), will we keep our heads about us and use our survivor’s instinct to come away with as little harm as possible?  Or will we be so consumed with fear and (however wrongfully) blame ourselves after the fact?

[cut a few lines to condense post]

I’m going to be honest with you. You had more than one survivor of sexual assault and rape telling you that what you did was triggering and offensive. I’m not going to say who, because it doesn’t matter. The fact is you posted something triggering and hurtful. People who have been through those experiences tell you how destructive laughing at those lines can be and posting about it in tags where survivors can read them (yes, they read the Game of Thrones tag too), yet you basically tell them to calm down. I don’t care what you think about feminism and rape culture. I don’t care that you call yourself a feminist.

I care that you have no regard for survivors telling you that you’re hurting them.

It is NOT your place to say what survivors find inappropriate or not. It is NOT your place to say we’re making more “solemn” and “serious” than it actually is.

Rape and assault are some of THE MOST serious things that will ever happen to people. MANY people. Many CHILDREN.

Also, most of your post doesn’t even make sense. And what does make sense makes me very angry and shaky. I’m not going to apologize for telling you that while I was browsing the GOT tag, I saw your post and immediately got ill. I’m not going to apologize for telling you how that made me ill. I’m not going to apologize for telling you that what you said (and what you continue to say) makes me think you care little to nothing about survivors. You didn’t care for people’s opinions (SURVIVOR’S OPINIONS) telling you that what you said was hurtful.

You don’t care.

A lot of people don’t care.

And that’s just wrong.

Also, Holocaust =/= Rape. Neither are interchangeable with the other. And no, I don’t believe those kinds of jokes should be made either. Making light of someone else’s tragic and traumatic experiences doesn’t make things better. It doesn’t make a lot of survivors feel better.

I’ll tell you what it does: It makes a whole bunch of survivors think that they’re going to be laughed at too. Survivors have enough to worry about without being laughed at.
